Question about my fish tank filter?

I have a 10 gallon freshwater fish tank with a Whisper filter. The setup has a filter and then replaceable cartridges. I just bought the replacement cartridges and they have changed them. The old ones had a plastic frame that you put the bag around then poured in the carbon. But the new one is a frameless cartridge that you simply rinse and insert. It comes with an indicator strip.

It shouldn’t matter which direction you put the filter media in. The water ends up going through all of it either way. If possible put the finest part of the filter furthest from the ridge where the water flows out of the filter. That way solids should be trapped in the finest part of the sponge / filter pad instead of being re-introduced into the aquarium. As for the other part I am not sure I have not used that particular filter. I do use a tetra on one of my tanks though and they do something similar with the cartridges.
